the return of peter citizen

I was chuffed to have been asked to launch my old friend Peter Milne's new book A Day in the Life of Rowland Howard, through M.33, at Artspace in Sydney on Saturday, September 12, as part of the Volume Art Book Fair. Peter is a photographer whose recent publications like The Oddfellow's Daughter use stills to imagine a sort of non-existent movie. But when I first met him, in Melbourne in 1978, he was calling himself 'Peter Citizen' and was like court photographer to the still-minuscule new punk underground there and its cast of would-be superstars. Or rather, he was just Bruce Milne's pesky little brother who never went anywhere without sticking his camera everywhere! Growing out of Peter's Juvenilia exhibition at the Strange Neighbour gallery in Melbourne earlier in 2015, and a tribute to our late mutual friend Rowland, this book goes back even deeper into those days, when Peter helped me and Bruce on our fanzine Pulp, whose mast-head further included contributors like Rowland, and it provides a tantalising glimpse into a world in which we were all living golden years, before a certain loss of innocence...
