SING IT IN THE MUSIC (1989)
Sing it in the Music was a sort of compendium program on the then-state of the art in Australian Aboriginal music, broadcast by ABC-TV in 1989. It was an important step in my evolution from writing journalism about Aboriginal bands to doing the whole Buried Country thing. Working out of the ABC's then-APU (Aboriginal Programs Unit) under producer Bernie Cannon (the great man who was very responsible in the early 70s for the ABC's seminal pop show GTK), I was researcher and co-writer, and out of a wide and disparate range of sources, I think we pulled together a pretty serviceable hour of television. But maybe I'm being too modest. Maybe it was even a bit groundbreaking. See below a segment from the film that pays tribute to the late, great Mac Silva:
