Sunday Painting

THE SUNDAY PAINTERS are almost without doubt the best band ever to have come out of the southern-NSW steel-town of Wollongong (rivaled only by Tumbleweed and, nominally, J. Walker’s Machine Translations), and they are also one of Australia’s great post-punk bands of the late-70s/early-80s era – who will hopefully no longer have to endure the epithet ‘lost’ or ‘forgotten’, due to the fine folk at Brooklyn’s What’s Your Rupture? label releasing a vinyl retrospective album called In My Dreams, which collects their first three EPs from 1979/’81 in a beautiful package that even includes a reprint of a 1983 interview I did with the band’s leader Peter Raengel, who sadly died in 2008.

This album is just the first of a projected two more, the others being their two original albums, 1982’s Something to Do and 1985’s 4th Annual Report. So, so much better than the Monochrome Set or Echo and the Bunnymen, if you know what I mean. To hear some non-album tracks go here, and to BUY a copy, go here, or, for Australians, obtain via R.I.P.Society/Repressed Records in Sydney.
